Home/Capabilities

Five capabilities. One transdisciplinary team. Built for the science that matters most.

Most studios hand you a discipline. We are built to be brought in as one team, across disciplines, at the moments that decide what happens next.

There are two ways to find what you need here. If you know the moment you are in, a raise, a readout, a launch, a crisis, start with Moments, and we will show you the team and the craft that moment calls for. If you know the craft you need, start with the capabilities below.

What this is

Either way, you are engaging the same integrated team of PhD science writers, certified medical illustrators and animators, brand strategists, and technologists, briefed together and accountable to the same outcome.

Not sure which you need? Start with Moments: when to bring us in
01

Animation & Motion

The mechanism, in motion, built to the standard our field is judged by.

Animation & Motion →

What we do

Mechanism-of-action and mechanism-of-disease animation. Research and explainer animation. Science education, disease awareness and advocacy film. Motion systems and sonic identity.

Built for: Clinical readout · Commercialization readiness · A new discovery · An education opportunity

02

Brand Identity & Design Systems

Your brand is the first signal of how seriously to take your science.

Brand Identity & Design Systems →

What we do

Brand strategy and positioning. Brand identity. Design language and systems. Investor and corporate presentation design. Environmental and experiential brand.

Built for: Founding · Pivot · Growth & scale · Commercialization readiness

03

Communications, Writing & PR

The most rigorous science fails to move people when the language around it is built for the wrong room.

Communications, Writing & PR →

What we do

Storytelling and knowledge-translation frameworks. Investor and partnering narrative. Global health and development communications. Regulatory and clinical communications. Science communications strategy and thought leadership.

Built for: Fundraising & partnering · A regulatory decision · A public health crisis · An education opportunity

04

Digital Engagement & Websites

For a science company, the website is the first document diligence reads.

Digital Engagement & Websites →

What we do

Corporate website design and strategy. Knowledge portals and information systems. Data and research portals. Congress and exhibit interactive technology. Novel interfaces and digital strategy.

Built for: Founding · Fundraising & partnering · Growth & scale · A public health crisis

05

Science Visualizations

The static record of your science, made legible enough to persuade and precise enough to defend.

Science Visualizations →

What we do

Data visualization and scientific figures. Pipeline visualization. Infographics and visual abstracts. Strategic data visualization built to be acted on.

Built for: Fundraising & partnering · Clinical readout · A new discovery · A public health crisis

How we're built

Studio Operations is the discipline that makes delivery predictable.

The reason everything else on this page stays reliable under deadline.

How we work

How we engage

Project-based Annual service agreement Grant-funded Retainer Workshops

We plan in two-week sprints with weekly check-ins, clear milestones, owners, and success measures set at kickoff. We also run workshops on decision frameworks, storytelling, and co-creation to upskill in-house teams.

Domains we know deeply

Oncology Cell & gene therapy Neurodegenerative disease Women's health Maternal & child health Infectious disease & vaccines One Health Synthetic biology — growing

Regulatory-aware

Grounded in FDA AdPromo training, we build regulatory and MLR considerations into the work rather than bolting them on at the end.

Where these go deep

The capabilities are the craft. Where a discipline goes deepest is a focus area.

Science Communication

When the mechanism is the story, and the wrong frame costs credibility.

Venture Design

When scientific conviction has to become capital confidence, stage by stage.

One Health

When human, animal, and environmental health are one argument that has to move policy and the public.

Common questions

What does Cognition Studio do?

We're a life sciences creative strategy studio. We translate the science and data that shape human health, with strategy, craft, and rigor, so the right people understand it, believe in it, and act on it. That work spans research, communications, science storytelling, brand strategy, visual design, web, motion, and strategic communications.

Who do you work with?

Biotech and pharma leadership and development teams, diagnostics and novel device companies, global health foundations and research institutes, and the venture firms backing them. We partner with founders and executives, and with business development, operations, and communications leaders.

How are you different from a typical agency?

Our teams are interdisciplinary and strategy-led. PhD science writers, board-certified medical illustrators and animators, brand strategists trained in both design and business, designers, communications specialists, and technologists work together end to end, so the science stays right from first insight to finished work. Science is our first language, not a subject we translate from the outside. Our work lives squarely in knowledge translation: moving data through information to knowledge, and on to action.

Do you provide both strategy and execution?

Yes. From workshops, roadmaps, user research, and message testing, through fully produced brand, content, digital, and visualization deliverables. We take a problem from definition to idea to finished work.

What scientific and health areas do you focus on?

We go deepest in three focus areas: Science Communication, Venture Design, and One Health. We practice across diverse thematics, including oncology (heme and solid tumor), cell and gene therapy, neurodegenerative disease, women's health, global public and environmental health, infectious disease and vaccines, common diseases across cardiac, liver, and metabolic health, synthetic biology, and emerging deep tech such as novel transplantation technology.

Can you translate complex mechanisms and data?

Yes. Through strategic narratives, mechanism visualization, and data visualization that keep the scientific nuance while clarifying the decision at hand, in static or in motion. We work across a range of motion software, and we build data visualizations with code when the work calls for it.

Do you support regulated communications?

Yes. We work across the arc from discovery to commercialization, with medical, legal, and regulatory review built in, and grounding in FDA AdPromo training through continuing education with the Drug Information Association (DIA).

Do you build websites and digital experiences in-house?

Yes. We have an in-house UX and development team that builds corporate sites, web applications, knowledge and data portals, and hand-coded interactive experiences for touch and exhibit environments. Our Boston-based engineering partner, CoreSecure, handles Veeva-compliant medical information hubs and other large, CMS-based corporate builds.

How do engagements start?

Usually with several discovery calls to define the objectives and understand your goals, audiences, and constraints. From there, a concept note to confirm alignment, then a scoped plan with clear milestones, owners, and success measures.

How do you structure and price engagements?

Project-based, annual service agreements, grants, or retainer, scoped to the complexity of the work. Whatever the engagement, we build a team of experts purpose-built for your needs.

Do you work globally?

Yes. We're based in Seattle, with staff in Boston and Washington, DC, and we collaborate with teams across time zones and regions, including extensive global health work.

How do you measure success?

We define success at kickoff, shaped by the problem we're solving together, whether that's clarity, stakeholder alignment, engagement, adoption, or decision speed, and we report against it. We also talk openly about ambition: whether the moment calls for a bold shot on goal or the right measured increment, and we set expectations accordingly.

Do you offer workshops or training?

Yes. Facilitated sessions on brand development, communication frameworks, ecosystem mapping, visual storytelling, science value articulation, and co-creative methods, to upskill internal teams, build alignment, and codify the processes and knowledge frameworks you rely on.

Start with strategy.

Tell us what your science has to do and who has to believe it, and we will tell you how we would approach it.
