Technical Project Manager

 
 

Cognition Studio, Inc. is a consultancy/agency working with innovation leaders in life sciences, healthcare, and global health.

We’re looking for an experienced technical project manager with a background in web development looking to continue their career at a boutique design studio.

As a Technical Project Manager, you will help deliver engaging, modern web experiences for our Life Science clients. As the functional and subject matter expert for the solution, you will be working collaboratively with a team and clients. You should demonstrate guidance and flexibility and the ability to build strong relationships with clients, team members, managers, and senior executives. You must deftly apply skills and multiple methodologies to design excellent solutions and manage team delivery. Through a proactive approach, you mitigate risks, resolve issues, and escalate when appropriate.

We hire people that quickly identify problems and rapidly look for solutions, who always take the time to log a bug, no matter how small it may be. You will be required to write a convincing email to communicate technical points to non-technical people; take action when you see things sit on your to-do list too long; and respond to emails, even if it’s to say, “I’m looking into this and will have an answer by tomorrow.”

  • Knowledgeable of best development practices, including source control management, coding standards, build processes, testing, and operations.
  • Knowledgeable of best practices for soliciting feedback and keeping a project moving forward
  • Knowledgeable of and comfortable with recommending technologies and implementation strategies based on project requirements and developer skillsets
  • Keen ability to validate design based on build requirements and manage internal QC procedures
  • Self-directed worker who can function independently with minimal supervision in a small studio environment.

 

Core Skills

  • Deep experience with modern web technologies, fluent enough to read and understand code
    • Nice-to-have: Intermediate-to-expert familiarity with WordPress, Drupal, Craft, React, Gatsby, Linux server administration, Netlify, Laravel Forge
  • Expert experience with source control, including GitHub/Bitbucket
  • Fluent in at least one current design tool with the ability to learn others (Adobe CC, Mural, Figma, Sketch, etc.)
  • Fluent in at least one project management software suite (including elements such as ticketing, time tracking and overall project status), with ability to learn others

 

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with studio leadership, you will develop budgets and proposals for new initiatives; write portions of SOWs as they are requested.
  • In conjunction with cross-departmental colleagues, you will create, manage, and execute a thorough project plan, including setting daily, weekly, and long-term project goals. Be flexible in approach to successfully follow both waterfall and agile methodologies.
  • Act as a liaison and primary facilitator between internal and external teams. Communicate with mid-to-senior level client stakeholders from marketing, technology, and executive management.
  • Become a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on the application, consulting on functionality and integration with other applications within our client’s ecosystem.
  • Understand the impact and importance of requests coming from various stakeholders to major roadmap initiatives. Identify potential risks and issues, anticipate points of resistance, and develop specific plans to mitigate or address concerns.
  • Be the point person in creating and leading development QC initiatives for projects
  • Collaborate with other team members, including Content Designer, UX Designer, Animators, Developers, to ensure our work always meets quality standards.
  • Create and execute system test plans, verify sprint release features, assist in triaging problems for development and QA teams
  • Maintaining CMS and security updates, SSL certificates are current and secure.
  • You are continually improving workflows, testing, debugging, and documenting procedures.
  • In collaboration with studio PMO teams, you will create and maintain project budgets and timelines; proactively track and correct variance from the project bid, scope, or timetable.
  • Keep all client stakeholders in the know via status reports and other forms of communication.
  • Proactively identify client risks or opportunities and help manage the project team to respond effectively.
  • Participate in client meetings.

 

Qualifications:

  • You have at least 5 years of experience in web development, including at least 2 functioning as a Project Manager
  • You have experience working in an agency/vendor position with multiple clients.
  • You enjoy working directly with clients and maintaining client relationships
  • You have a proactive mindset that supports your success on a small team. When you see something that needs to be done, you take it on without thinking twice.
  • Ideally, you have experience in the life science space
  • You have top-notch oral and written communication skills and have no problem conversing with clients, designers, and developers alike.
  • You’re charming – coworkers and clients love you, and more importantly, trust you.
  • You can effectively communicate ideas in a presentation setting.
  • You have excellent team-building, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
  • You have a genuine enthusiasm for the work you do, exude positive energy, and can maintain a sense of humor under pressure.
